This coming week, I will be visiting Boston for the first time. Despite periodically crossing the Atlantic for one event or another, I have never been to the home of Irish America. As such, we are taking the opportunity to host a meetup for Fitzwilliam readers and/or their friends and/or my friends.
This will be a sequel to the Fitzwilliam San Francisco meetup and the Fitzwilliam New York meetup.
I will be stopping off in Boston on the way to the Progress Conference in Berkeley, so if any of you are there, please say hi!
I preemptively reject any implication that I have been sucking up too much to Americans. Our twice-monthly reading groups and technical AI sessions, and our monthly policy and recreational maths meetups, are all in Dublin or Belfast.
The meetup will be at The Plough and Stars, nearby Central Square, from 7pm on Wednesday, October 7th.1 You can (optionally) RSVP here.
I can’t promise how long it will go on for, but I can promise that I will still be there for as long as anybody wants to talk to me. I have mixed thoughts about hosting such an event in an Irish pub, but I am told by locals that this one is pretty good.2
In order to make myself visible, I will wear the t-shirt and hat associated with our campaign for the 2068 Olympics to be hosted in Cork.
If you are bringing a friend who has no idea who I am, I am happy to answer questions about any of my recent posts, e.g.:
If there are any issues, you can direct them to sam@thefitzwilliam.com or message @Sam__Enright on Twitter.
This is technically in Cambridge rather than Boston, but my sense is that more people in my circles are in the Harvard or MIT orbit than in Boston proper.
A surprisingly challenging trivia question: Are there more pubs in Ireland, or “Irish pubs” in the rest of the world combined?
